87MJTIM
I am looking on ebay and craiglist at scanners for the Comanche. I am seeing several different models where the cartridges cover different years. Some cartridges cover "thru 1998" or other years. Other cartridges cover "model years 1996 to 2000" which I know is OBDII. Since my truck is pre-OBDII, will the later model carts read the computer codes? Is the red brick the same and just the carts are inter-changeable? Which ones should I be looking at?
JH4020
You will need the "thru 1998" cartridge. OBD II and OBD I are not interchangeable. The unit uses the Cartridges to tell it what to do.
Eagle
The '87 isn't even OBD1. OBD1 came the Jeep in the 1991 model year. The Renix system used a proprietary scan tool. There were some professional grade scanners that had adapters and software to read Renix, but be sure that's what you're getting before you buy. Also, keep in mind that the Renix system doesn't store codes. Scanning a Renix is watching the data in real time, but if the engine won't start and run, there's nothing to read. 1987Comanche
The MT2500 will talk to Renix with the right personality key, cable, and cartridge. It's actually a very solid & capable scanner though it can't graph like a Solus. It's been a few years since I hooked one up to a Renix so I don't remember the exact P/Ns for key, cable, & cartridge off the top of my head. The base units are all the same so buy based on condition. As JH4020 mentioned the software can be acquired separately from the scanner.
87MJTIM
There are several on ebay. Some of the sellers show the cartridges that are included. I am only following the ones that show carts for Jeeps, and have the primary and troubleshooting carts. I also look to see if the Jeep-01 cable is pictured. Without both of those, I keep looking. I just don't want to get a set of OBDII carts and not be able to use them. Thanks Eagle. I was aware that the computer did not store codes. I want to get one for under $200. terrawombat
I've got one of these laying around somewhere. I also just acquired a Renix Jeep so I'll see if I have the right combination of accessories to get it to talk. The big question is...what storage container is it hiding in? I don't recall unpacking it when I moved 4 years ago.
