Speedo Gear??

Recommended Posts

Have regeared and put on bigger tires; my speedo now reads about 8MPH low. 91 MJ, AW-4, 2WD, electronic speedometer. Do I have a speedo gear I can change out to correct the speedo error? If so, WTF is it? I can't even find it in my FSM. Damn sure isn't on the transfer case since I don't have one. Thanks.........

It's be in the tailhousing of your tranny. They use the same gears as the tcase would, AFIK.

Find where the speedo-cable runs into the tailhousing on your tranny, and undo it. There will also be another retaining bolt there. Pull it. The speedo gear will come out.

I dunno where they cover it in the manual.

It is on the tailshaft area. I just did the 2-4 swap and used my same speedo gear in the t-case. the hole is there. it just goes to a small plug and then wires run along the top of the tranny to the harness.

Great, thanks. I'll check it out tomorrow - errr, today.

Found it, pulled it, 34 teeth. Need a 37 or 38 tooth, according to various tables and calculations. Have verified the speedo reads about 8-9 MPH low, and got a ticket Thursday night. The cop wouldn't listen, pure redneck 'Bama a-hole. However he did give me a pic from his daughter's wedding reception:
