Which bucket seats fit better 1986 or 1996

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to upgrade my trucks interior and I'm thinking of getting away from the bench seat which is God awful uncomfortable if the truck is driven more than 20 miles. I realize that I'm going to have to recover any junkyard seats I find.  So here's where I'm at:  I found two sets of 2 door XJ seats in salvage yard.  One set is in a 86 XJ and has the rocker style sliders (which I understand makes the seat sit 4" higher) but the nice "butterscotch" fancy wrap around seats with the vinyl pocket on the back panel. .   The 96 has plain style dull gray cloth seats with the standard sliders the seats are dirty but fully functional.  Which set makes more sense?  Could I just remove the older 86 seats and put them on a newer slider so that they don't sit so high?  Thoughts........

The 96 seats are not bolt in replacements.  1995 marked a change in how the Cherokee seats were mounted to the floor pan.  You need to retain your Comanche seat brackets from the bench seat, no matter what.  Because they fit the Comanche Floor Pan.

I changed from a bench seat to buckets and found the buckets gave me a sore back.  Then I read some posts here about fitting Grand Cherokee seats and some additional posts about how to convert the 4 door GC seats to fold forward for the Comanche or a 2 door Cherokee.

So I fitted a Grand Cherokee seat in the truck - no more sore back - short trips or long trips.

As for the pockets on the back of the seat - I had an upholstery shop ad the pockets to my bucket seats.  And some Grand Cherokee seats have the the pockets from the factory.

Bo - post the link to the Fold forward conversion from the 95+ 2 door XJ seats being adapted to the Grand Cherokee seats.

Also, you can do a bolt in conversion for the Grand Cherokee seats to the Comanche with some angle Iron and bolts.  Did it in my truck for the driver seat.  Well, Maybe not  " bolt in".  But I did use lots of bolts!

Here is a link to another thread with more details and some pictures of GC seats in a Comanche, and a bunch of answers:

Guys,

Thanks for the great info, as it stands now I think I will take a hard look to see if I can find a nice set of Grand Cherokee seats.  My other issue is that my truck has the Cordovan interior I really wish I could find a nice set of GC seats in burgundy but I know that's impossible otherwise I'm paying the upholstery guy to recover them.
