New to the MJ world

Recommended Posts

I just picked this baby up for $600 bucks today with a new valve cover gasket and 2 sets of tires and wheels....she ran in December, has a 165k. She's a 1990 4.0 5-spd 4x4. HP dana-30 front dana-35 rear....on the hunt for a 44....waiting for the battery to charge and see if I can't get the beast to start....fingers crossed. My first Comanche and I'm soooo excited to start building.

Once I get the motor started I'll be able to move forward a lot faster. Having fuel delivery issues right now....going to pick up a pump shortly...

Plan right now is to make it a decent wheeler. I have a built 95xj but my dad mostly drives it. Wanted a Mj for a longggg time and at 600 bucks I couldn't say no.

Thinking 3-4 In of lift, probably 31s for the time.being as I have an old set. Will prolly bump to 33s when I buy new tires. Planning on a arb locker in the rear and eventually one in the front. Contimplanting doing the 99+ front end swap and interior as well. Have pretty easy access to a blown complete 2001.

Biggest thing is.going.to be getting it started first....then moving on.

Just a couple of questions for you Mj pros out there. 1) what is the best axle to put under the rear if doing it on a budget, plan on going SOA, would like to do a limited slip and disk breaks in the rear, but eventually will be putting arbs in front and rear

2) what years and up do I need to be looking for a Dana 30 without the cad axle lock.

3) for a mild lift, 3-4.5in keeping short arms. What brands have you all had good luck with for replacement rear leaves with the SOA? I know doing the SOA nets 4.5-5.5 in of lift in the rear.

4) how hard is it to swap to a newer dash setup from a 99+ xj as well as door panels and windows and such? Do the doors from a newer xj fit on a 90 Mj?

Thanks for the advise. If any of you have links or thread links on here I can reference for things like the SOA build and interior swaps I'd appreciate it so I know where to find em.

- this always sparks a debate, but if you want a good replacement with LSD and discs I'd go with a 95? and up 8.8 from an explorer.  You can find LSD units fairly easy, they have discs factory, and they're 31 spline axles.  You would need spacers to match the width in the rear and they are c clip axles, but I'd go that route.  Another cheap option is a 29 spline 8.25 from an XJ and doing a disc swap.  Also keep in mind matching your axle ratios.

2) what years and up do I need to be looking for a Dana 30 without the cad axle lock.

- not sure on the years, but you can swap a non cad axle shaft and seal to permanently fix the CAD.

-General spring and hell creek are the only 2 I know of that sell stock replacement leaves.  You'll most likely see 5.5" plus with a SOA especially if you use new springs.  You'll have one gmhell of a rake if you go that short in the front.

4) how hard is it to swap to a newer dash setup from a 99+ xj as well as door panels and windows and such? Do the doors from a newer xj fit on a 90 Mj?

- This has been covered several times in build threads.  Never done it so I can't comment on the swap.  Doors swap over, but you have to replace the door striker.  I know others will chime in with more knowledge, but this is a start.

Thanks for the advise. If any of you have links or thread links on here I can reference for things like the SOA build and interior swaps I'd appreciate it so I know where to find em.

Since you are wanting to do a front end conversion, better axle, etc.  You could always just snag a donor XJ.  That would get you an 8.25 rear axle and front axle with matching gears as well as the front end conversion you want, and a few goodies for spare (transfer case and trans) or things you can sell to make some money back.

Also a good point if you want to go that route. If you're looking for an axle try http://car-part.com/ might be able unto find something.

I'll probably try to find a donor xj. Like I said I believe I have access to a 01. I might just have to push to get it.

In other news....while I'm collecting parts I figured I'd start ripping on the interior and doing what I can until then. Pictures to follow
