XJ to MJ Axle Swap (Front + Rear)

Recommended Posts

I bought an 89 manche about 2 years ago and the guy I bought it from swapped the front end to a dana44 and completely butchered everything down there (cut off old mounts when trying to 3 link it, put an aftermarket track bar from a chevy that is 2 inches too long so my axle sits sideways, unmatched gears...ect.) I could go on but you get the idea. Anyway my uncle gave me his 90 cherokee today with a blown motor. Has stock axles and a 4 inch lift, Would these axles swap right over to my MJ? If not, what can be done to make these bastards fit because anything is an improvement over the ride it gives me at the moment.

The front axle is the same for an XJ and an MJ. No issue there (other than recreating the original mounts!)

The XJ rear is a spring-over-axle. The MJ is a spring-under axle, and the spacing between the spring perches is slightly different from the XJ to the MJ. It just means welding on a pair of new spring perches, or carefully cutting the old ones off and relocating them.

Amen: That PO sounds like such a winner that he may have butchered the frame-side mounts as well

You will also have to cut off the XJ shock mounts to re-use the MJ spring plates/shock studs assuming that PO did not butcher or replace those, too. If the are gone/butchered pick up some simple shock mounting tabs when you get new perches.
