86 MJ powered by 4.3 v6

Recommended Posts

I have swapped a gm 4.3 into my 86 MJ.  I used the Novak motor mounts and redrilled my factory transmission support/ crossmember.  I have plenty of clearance at the front of the engine and I'm looking for advice on the radiator.  The radiator had over 280,000 miles on it when the 2.8 finally went.  I've already dropped in the 4.3, mated 700r4 and 231C from a gmc s15 jimmy.  Will the stock style 2.8 radiator cool the 4.3 or will I need to upgrade?  If I change to the 87 up radiator, will I have to change my hood latch/ front end?  Thanks for the help!

There are 2 and 3 core replacement radiators out there for your application hut they are expensive. The WJ Grand Cherokee rad is similar in size and might adapt. I only say this because I adapted a WJ cooling fan to fit my 2.5 rad (same rad as 2.8). You might try to find some specs in size for both and go from there. Might be a cheaper alternative that way.

Thanks for the responses! I have seen some of the radiators for this swap, but they are all 87+ style radiators. I have considered going that route but I'm not sure how much modification would have to be done for my hood latch. I don't mind chopping and welding some if necessary, but if anyone has done this swap the info would be great!! Thanks again!

Thanks for the radiator advice everyone.  I installed a 2 row aluminum newer style radiator.  I had to modify the header panel some, but everything tied in nicely.  Ive been working on bracketry for shifter and cables.  I have mostly everything wired up but I'm needing some help with neutral safety switch.  From what I can tell the factory 3 speed had the NSS on the transmission.  The 700r4 utilizes a shifter located NSS.  Will the NSS from a mid 80's chevrolet bolt right in to the factory shift column? Or are there other ideas for how to arrange the NSS?  Thanks for the help!!
