redwolf624
so i've been wanting to get a winch for a while but i don't know if i need to upgrade my alternator, i already got a 800cca battery but i got the stock with a/c alternator, i plan on running the lights on my bumper, stock lights off the switch, 2 led light pods and a 20" light bar inbetween them on the roll bar, and i'll end up puttin a single light on the rear to see in the bed and/or hook up for a recovery, and of course the winch, any idea what amp alt i need? johnj92131
How long are you going to run the winch? I am thinking the winch is going to depend on the battery for a high current supply when in use, rather than on alternator power alone. So it comes down to how long will it take your current altenator to top off the battery to 100% charge. For guidance on which alternator to use, you may want to look at the police package XJ, it used a high idle switch to support a heavy electrical (and cooling) load expected on a police used XJ. Not sure what rating the alternator was. If you check the DIY section, you will find a high output altenator from either the Grand Cherokee or a Dodge truck. That may be the solution for you. Here is the link for the DIY altenator upgrade: http://comancheclub.com/topic/33000-junk-yard-upgrades/?hl=alternator 136 amps from GC V8 alternator and a 117 amp upgrade from a 4 cylinder Dakota. If that is not enough to run your winch, you may want to use a 2nd 12 volt battery. The dual battery was an export option for the XJ. HAM radio operators use a dual battery setup to support their communications and still keep the car battery to start the car.
HOrnbrod
The Nippon Denso 136A alternator was used on 91 and up Mopar vehicles and was regulated by the ECU. To use the ND alt on his 86 rig, he would have to swap over the mounting bracketry and externally regulate it. Hard to do with his 2.8 engine. Best bet is to have a shop rebuild your existing Delco alt for more amps.
redwolf624
well i'm only gonna run the winch long enough to get out of a hole/unstuck, and only bein 2wd at the moment that could be 5 minutes it could be 30 minutes, nobody knows for sure, but i have a few yj and tj in some local jeep clubs that have added a winch to their jeep but never added a second battery and they run the winch with the light on, Redwolf
benjy_26
AC Delco P/N 335-1048. It's off of a 96 Buick Roadmaster. 140 amps and all you have to do to throw it in a 2.5 MJ is a pullet swap and to clock the back (or extend your cables). People just keep coming up with great solutions to different problems. Does this work on the 4.0 as easily?

If the Renix 4.0's used a Delco CS unit, I don't see why the Roadmaster alternator woulddn't work.

He has a 2.8. 2.5 or 2.8 i should be able to use the alternators suggested as long as i swap pulleys right? Redwolf
