Tommy
I've searched the forum and I've searched the Google and I've found everything from "the d30 can handle 35s with some upgrades" to "the d30 with break if you look at it funny, only option is a d60 from an old Ford 1 ton." I'll be moving into a house soon with a40x50 shop and I'll be starting my project in earnest. Loose plan is an lq9 or similar, 4l60e(maybe 4l80e) with a np149 awd tcase and probably a 4 linked 8.8. The lq9 will stay basically stock. At most it'll have a mild cam and headers. I'll be running 33s, which are already ordered. Would a later 90s hpd30 be usable with some beefing up? FrankTheDog
No low range and no off road? With approximately 400 or so horsepower and street only with no flaming hole shots it would probably live. A better choice without going to a D60 would be a high pinion D44 from a Ford. Even a low pinion D44 from a 86-91 full size wagoneer probably would work fine.
Tommy
I don't really do the rock crawling thing, I'm more into the fast desert running thing. Honestly, 2wd would serve me most of the time, but I'm going to be moving to Idaho soon to start a new job (and get the shop going) and there get pretty good snow there and I like the idea of awd. It'll be kind of a jeepspeed thing but not built to compete, just built for me.
Incommando
At minimum I would do trussing and/or internal sleeving, better axle side link mounts, and chromo shafts if you intend to use a hpD30. People always use tire size as a measuring stick but there is more to it. What may survive at 190 horsepower is a whole different story at 400. benjy_26
I think a HPD30 would survive if trussed and sleeved, especially if you use a leter model with the larger u-joints.
