jeepman 87 Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 My 89 mj just lost parking lights, iput a new fuse in and it melts, changed light switch and cleaned ground but no go can anyone help and also my rear harness gets real warm
MuddFoot Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 try the front main connector should be near driver side headlight. check that
Eagle Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 If it's blowing fuses, you have a short circuit somewhere. Find the large(-ish) connector where the rear harness plugs into the chassis harness. Unplug it, then try again. If it still blows fuses, that's not the problem area. Then disconnect the front light harness and try again, Rinse and repeat as necessary. You need to isolate the problem to a smaller universe than the entire truck, or you'll drive yourself bonkers just chasing things around because somebody said, 'Try ___."
MuddFoot Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 i was just going where all my other jeeps had issues at the front connector full of stuff and wires rubbed through.....
jeepman 87 Posted December 1, 2014 Author Posted December 1, 2014 But why would my rear harness and plugs get hot
jeepman 87 Posted December 2, 2014 Author Posted December 2, 2014 Just checked lights still blowing fuse but tail lights really really dim but rear harness still warm
Eagle Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 Just checked lights still blowing fuse but tail lights really really dim but rear harness still warm It's blowing fuses because you are using more current than the fuse can carry. That's what fuses are for -- to prevent the wires from burning up. Did you try any of the trouble-shooting suggestions you've been given?
Guest Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 But why would my rear harness and plugs get hot Rear harness and plugs are getting hot because they're drawing too much electrical current through them. If it's blowing fuses, you have a short circuit somewhere. Find the large(-ish) connector where the rear harness plugs into the chassis harness. Unplug it, then try again. If it still blows fuses, that's not the problem area. Then disconnect the front light harness and try again, Rinse and repeat as necessary. Like mentioned by Eagle, you more than likely have a short in the electrical system. I would follow his advice and see if it corrects the issue you're having. You may also want to check the actual headlight block switch under the gauge cluster; they have been known to cause problems like what you're describing that when they are about to bite the big one. Look for frayed wiring and the like there.
Steve Gregory Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Checked the ground for the rear harness.
