Katzer Posted March 29, 2014 Share Posted March 29, 2014 New to comanches and the forum. Bought an 89 2wd 2.5L MJ with bad AX4. Looking to convert it to 4wd. Will a 4wd AX5 out of any model and/or year jeep bolt up as long as it comes from a 2.5L? or does it have to be out of an AMC era jeep? dasbulliwagen Posted March 29, 2014 Share Posted March 29, 2014 Any year MJ or XJ AX5 and transfer case should bolt up no problem. It is said the the YJ and TJ models have the transfer case clocked differently and its more difficult to make them work. You can even get a set from an XJ or MjJ 2.8 V6, but that would have a less desireable transfer case. Keep an eye ou too for one with an external slave cylinder setup. 86 had that, but in 87 they changed to internal. They changed back later on, but I couldnt tell you what year it was. Get the front driveshaft with whatever one you get so you won't have to worry about that. Youll need to find a correct rear driveshaft or have yours shortened to fit. Youll also need a new speedo cable as the 2wd one will be too short, and get the shifter and linkage to match your transfer case so you won't have issues with transfer case shifting. Then as you know gear matched front and rear axles, preferably in 4 :10 flavor. Good luck. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I have seen alot for sale out of TJ and YJ but having a hard time finding a 4 cyl XJ for parts. I will just keep plugging away on craigslist. Thanks again. Don't know if the length of the transfer case input shaft is the same. There is more to it than spline count, there are also three different lengths of the input shaft depending on what transmission. Drive line lengths and short bed vs. long bed also makes a difference in the length of the shaft.
