Gauge Cluster Interchangability

Recommended Posts

My 86 2.5 has a newer gauge cluster in it (has a Chrysler pentastar on the back) and the oil sensor is pegged past 80. I replaced the sender and it didn't move so I'm guessing the gauge itself is messed up. I grabbed what seemed to be a matching cluster from an XJ this weekend at the junkyard and didn't realize until I got home that it was a newer style that didn't have a speedo cable... So obviously I can't use this whole cluster, however I'm wondering if the oil sensor itself would work? I'd guess that it would be the same but I could be wrong. It would be awesome if they interchange.

The oil pressure gauge will peg if there is an open in the circuit, or the wrong sending unit, the switch for the idiot light instead of the sensor for the gauge. Take the wire going to the sender and ground it. The gauge should go to zero. The individual gauges can be swapped between panels, letting you use the '86 panel and replacing the gauges with later year ones.

Probably should start a new thread on this but I'm just going to add onto this one. Two days ago I swapped the idiot light panel out of my '90 MJ with one from a '87 XJ with gauges. The oil pressure wasn't reading right. After swapping out 3 different senders I read 'Sidepipes' post and advised him how to check it out. It dawned on me I wasn't doing anything like I suggested he do and instead I was taking a shotgun approach. Sooooo,,,,the logical approach. The wire open, ground test indicated the gauge was bad. Removed panel and onto the work bench. Double checked. Sure enough, gauge was bad. So much for following my own advice. Anyway every things back together again and working and the GF happy. I'm fixing it up for her. :rotf:   :D
