Ax4 4 Speed Mtx Sloppy Shifting

So I picked up an '86 2.5 4 speed MTX 4x4 Comanche this past weekend and the shifter is pretty sloppy. I had an especially hard time with staying in 3rd and 4th gear unless I held it very firmly in place until the clutch was all the way out. It's been quite cold and snowy so I haven't dug into the truck at all yet but I'm curious if this is likely an issue with the AX4 itself internally, or if it's something easier to address like worn bushings or something with the linkages? I tried searching but couldn't come up with anything good. I'm used to dealing with Neons (15 years newer) but for those it's common for the rubber shifter bushings to deteriorate and cause this same sort of issue. Any pointers on what to haev a look at would be appreciated.  :)

The dogs in the transmission are worn, needs replaced. I have a '90 AX15 doing the same thing in 2nd. I just live with it rather than pull and fix it.
