Accelerating I'm getting the battery light flicker. I'm betting it's time to replace the alternator.  Is there an upgrade that works for the 2.5 that provides some more power? Nobody in town stocks the replacement so I'll have to order it anyway, why not upgrade a bit.

They do make, or did, heavy duty units for the 2.5

A year ago or so, I got a '87 MJ with a 200 amp alternator on it. It fit in the stock mounting, no adapter. It was a forestry service truck and the bed has several holes in it where some kind of special equipment was in it.

That's nice to have - it's good for around 2.5 kW at full load, right? Back it up with something to step up the idle, an isolator, a big inverter, and a couple big deep-cycle batteries and you have respectable capacity for remote AC power where there is no reasonable alternative.

My non-A/C 2.5 had a 61a alternator that failed on me this past Labor Day weekend. I moved up to a new 74a from the local auto parts store for about $100 with a core. Just had to reuse the old pulley and it went right in, no problems.

 

While it's no 100a or 200a alternator, it works just fine for a daily driver.

Napa is 13-4011 (common GM alt) or 13-4011SW for single wire. Probably the light is coming on because the brushes are worn down. Simple to change and about $5.
