Speedo Not Working :/

Recommended Posts

I'm assuming your rig is an '87 because of your name (on my phone so can't see sig or anything). Cable could be bad. Did it just give up the go or did it start acting up before hand? The gear could be stripped as well at the end of the cable.

Have you removed the gauge cluster or the transfer case lately?

If not, it's likely your speedo cable is broken...or somehow came out of the square cable keys on either end.  You can remove the transfer case speedo gear housing and take a look at the cable, spin it, see if it affects the speedo.

If he worked on the transmission, he must have disconnected the speedo drive cable. The adapter to which the cable attaches at the tranny and which holds the speedo drive gear is eccentric -- it has to be properly oriented according to the number of teeth on the gear. My guess is that your mechanic just stuck it back in without orienting it correctly, and the plastic gear is either not contacting the drive gear inside the tranny, or was not correctly adjusted and has now been stripped.

Left side of the transmission, in the taillshaft housing. You can't really miss it -- the speedo cable is about a quarter to 5/16-inch in diameter, and that runs right into it.

The "quill" (which is the adapter that holds the plastic speedo gear) is about an inch and a half in diameter and is held in the tranny by a forked retainer with a single anchor bolt. The forks of the retainer engage specified points on the quill, depending on the number of teeth on the plastic gear.

It is not rocket science.  The cable connector is just a square cable end on either end that fits in to a square receiver,  gear turns, cable turns, speedometer indicates speed.

Here is a basic idea of what you're looking for.  It's held in to the tranny by one bolt...on the fork.  Remove the bolt, wiggle and pull the speedo gear housing out of the tranny (don't worry about anything spewing out of the tranny, it won't.

When you pull it out, it will all come out including the speedo gear.  Then unscrew the cable from the housing, you should see a square cable end like this.

Don't pull on that...it will come undone at the speedometer end if you do.  Just try to jam the square end back in to the GEAR part, and put it all back together.  Then drive and see how it works.  If it doesn't, either your cable is broken or the square part at the speedometer end is messed up.

Or it's not oriented correctly.
