ScottJeep
So I've finally crossed over into MJ land. Have the XJ, KJ, KK. Have owned another XJ and YJ. Am excited to get things going with this one. Biggest issue right now is the steering column. It's a mess. It works...but I wondered if I would make it home alive. After reading over SEVERAL steering column rebuilds I am trying to get my thoughts around getting it rebuilt correctly. Not many have full pictures all the way down to nothing. Here is what we are starting with. 1988 Comanche Pioneer, 250K showing, PO says motor replaced ( he only had it two weeks, basically he pawn a title for a buddy in a jamb and didn't want the truck ) 4.0, 5spd, Air (works), very minor body damage...paid less than $900 and drove it home 40 miles in Sat Atlanta traffic! Yes, that is an Explorer in the background. Son just had to buck dad's system of Jeepdom. here is what I have to deal with on the steering column Any additional links that I may have missed would be appreciated. I practiced the tear down on a couple of local JY Jeeps today. Broke my brand new Pivot Pin tool quickly! Have reached out to a local Atlanta steering column rebuild guy. Never hurts to be told what experience is worth. Here are the McGuyverNeck switches that you must operate to get the brake lights and blinkers to work. The one small switch is the wipers. Yes, it was fun indeed driving home...kinda rainy, needing to run the lights, not quite sure how everything worked. My escort back home pulled up and informed me quickly..."uhh you need to figure out which of those switch combinations give you brake lights!" onlyinajeep726
If you were at the junkyard messing with steering columns, why didn't you just grab the entire column and swap your ghetto one out? Seems a lot simpler and will probably be less costly than a rebuild. Just my 2¢.
ScottJeep
hornbrod..... that is the one I found ( from you in another post ) I'm using it to educating myself with. This was the one time I actually wanted an iPad or something with me at the JY. only....I found two ( out of 2 Comanches and 30 Cherokees ) that was my setup ( manual, tilt, int wipers ). May go back and get the one. It was at the the one yard that pretty much is 60% more expensive than anybody else. I really prefer rebuilding over just swapping but I understand you point.
