89 Metric Ton Hamburger Ressurection

Recommended Posts

Project #1 is the Farmer. Number 2 is Big Ton Hamburger. Named as such 'cause I found her in Hamburg PA, about 110 miles from my S. Joisey home. It's a 5 speed 4.0 4x LB with full gauge cluster. She would start but would not stay running. Frame is solid but its a PA truck and the floors and rear wells are showing the salt. Interior is surprisingly good. Even the headliner is intact, not even sagging! No tears in the rubber matting either. Buying off a Mom & Pop lot, it was listed @ $2900.00. Using all the bargaining chips such as rust, rot, smashed rear bumper, no operating gauges ( a fresh fuse fixed that ) and even flirting with Pop's daughter, I got her for $1900.00. Not bad considering only 98000 miles and snaring a Metric Ton. Next day I dragged or is it drug? my bride back to Hamburg with a Harbor Freight $69.00 tow bar in the bed of the 05 Rumble Bee hauler. Wifey helped hook her up (she's good that way) in between eyeing up Pops daughter and wandering around the lot looking for Wranglers which is her obsession. Towed Burger back with no problems. Avoided a major disaster about to happen due to cheap HF bolts loosening during the trip. Unhooking the rig, one tow bracket literally dropped off at my feet! Good thing we didn't need to go another mile! What a mess that would have been. Burger has been sitting in the yard for a few weeks now while my wallet heals. To be continued....

Got all the fluids changed out on the Burger. Oil looked like molasses. The gear lube in the rears had water in it but not excessive. Trans and transfer case looked good but I changed the lube anyway. Drained the radiator and flushed it out back yard style with a garden hose. There were no records with the purchase so no telling when the last service was ever done. Climbed underneath the crushed back bumper and sprayed all the bolts down with penetrating oil. I've got a new Westin black step I picked up cheap at a swap meet that will fit nicely on the old brackets that I'm gonna have to heat up and beat back into shape. Good exercise. There's some body damage on the drivers side bed where the bumper slammed home. A couple of wacks with a hammer and a pick ax will bring that mess back into shape. Enough for today. My backs killing me...

LOL - Your probably not gonna believe this, Kirk but that was complete stupidity and chance/fate that I posted that link! In my struggles to figure out photobucket in order to post Jeep pics that link (still can't figure out how) got posted instead of the MJ pics I was shooting for. However, touché my friend on the reply. Still can't stop laughing.
