Water Pump Removal Question 1989 Six Cylinder

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to get the water pump out of my '89 Comanche 4.0, but cannot get it all the way out. My question:

Do I have to remove the power steering pump?

If so, how? I can't see where the center nut is to loosen and remove the aluminum bracket that allows the PS pump to tension the belt.

If not that, can I remove that pulley that is in the way of the iron water hose pipe on the left? I tried and it seemed to be way too tight to try to remove.

I unscrewed the pipe on the left that you are talking about and got it out of the way, as far as the PS pump I loosened the bolts enough to wiggle the water pump out.  It's a tight fit, and be careful when placing the new one on.  I dabbed a little rtv on the gasket to keep it on and in place while turning it almost 90 degree to slide it into and behind the PS bracket.

Hope this helps.

:agree:   You gots it. Just pop off that pipe and your good to go, like macs97xj said the power steering bracket makes for a tight fit, but it is 100% possible to remove the pump without removing the PS pump/bracket.

And if your in a pinch, RTV by itself works great as gasket maker. Scrape the crap out of the mating surfaces until it is perfectly clean, then smear a decent amount on both surfaces. Bolt the pump back on and wiggle it just a little to get it to seat, then tighten it down the rest of the way and let it sit for a good hr or longer if you have the time. Then your good to go.

Thanks!

The last guy installed the pulley with some locktite, but I got enough leverage to break it free.

Now having fun with bleeding the Renix system. I'm going to drill a hole in the thermostat and hope that it works.
