Ax-15 Donors

Recommended Posts

My 89 MJ has the BA-10. From reading on here it seems an AX-15 is the best option for transmissions.  Can anyone list the years and other vehicles that would make good donors.  Or is there an even better option for transmission?  My clutch is getting old and I'm thinking if I'm going to have the trans out I might as well put a better one back in.  Thoughts?

In '89, Jeep switched from the BA10 to the AX15, so you have an early model year MJ.  The AX15 was used in just about all Jeeps with the 4.0 engines.  I am not sure when they stopped using it.  If you are looking to up grade, look for a '96 or later model TJ or XJ.  That was when Jeep switched to external slave cylinder.  If you find one, be sure to get EVERYTHING! including the bell housing, and the internal parts, and the cross member under the trans.  The cross member is diff from the BA10.

Also, you will need the transfer case (assuming 4WD), since the spline count is diff from the BA to AX.

Simply put, "everything bell housing to the trans case."
