Do you REALLY think GM re-engineered their steering column production to accommodate an odd size cylinder from Chrysler?

No, I DON'T know. That why I'm kinda throwing it out there and asking. I went to a couple of sites which say that the ignition cylinders they sell don't interchange. But, of course, it's possible that they're going strictly by model years.

Well, if they need different key blanks to work ... they don't interchange. That doesn't mean they won't fit the same steering column. When a locksmith replaces an ignition cylinder, he uses the existing key and grinds the tumblers to work with that key.

As many DIY projects as we do on these MJs... I can't believe no one has done this before.  Or at least tried to do it before.  I'm concerned that the opening and fit of the ignition cylinder will be wrong.  But the doors?  Those can be modded.

Just got thru switching a 95XJ door lock into a '87MJ. Loose fit but workable. The '87 lock will not fit the XJ. Locating tab to wide. A nibbling tool or file would take care of that but I really don't know why any one would want to. Have'nt tried the ign sw lock yet. Can't get the #$%@*^&%#$@*%$# steering wheel off. The two pulling holes in the hub are to narrow for my regular puller to work.
