coyote kid Posted May 23, 2013 Posted May 23, 2013 replaced my starter .. sounds like a cat bieng strangled ...i heard i have to shim it. how do i do this?
Geonovast Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 It's been awhile since I've had a starter off a 2.5, but I don't remember seeing any shims.
jimoshel Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 You can only shim a starter when it attaches to the block sideways, ala Chevy. The Jeep attaches from the front and to the best my knowledge cannot be shimmed. Check the solenoid attached to the top of the and make sure it's not sticking. Also check the starter over run clutch, that it's not sticking.
Geonovast Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Aw, c'mon Jim. Hasn't been that long. The 2.5's starter does bolt up into the block, remember? :rotfl2:
jimoshel Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 AWWW S,,,,,,. Go easy on me. I've had a hard day. I got up this morning.
jimoshel Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 Now that my memories been refreshed, the book says use a pin gauge and check the clearance between the starter gear and ring gear. That is hard to do. I just start adding shims until any noise goes away. That is, it sounds right when engaging.
64 Cheyenne Posted May 24, 2013 Posted May 24, 2013 I'm kind of curious how you know what sound a strangled cat makes :dunno: Or is it  because you really do know...
