dhisso Posted May 3, 2013 Share Posted May 3, 2013 Hey I have a 2.5L 2wd Jeep comanche and I am able to get a 89 jeep with a 4.0 and 5 speed 4wd. I was wondering if I could just bolt up the transmission from the 4.0 to the 4cyl? Is it a different bell housing? Different input shaft? I was just wandering. Geonovast Posted May 3, 2013 Share Posted May 3, 2013 No. Well.... mostly no. They're not even the same transmission. 2.5 uses the AX-5, 4.0 uses the BA 10/5 and AX-15. Not the same bolt pattern. It is possible to bolt an AX-15 to a 2.5, but it requires an elusive Dakota bellhousing and some fab work. If you're picking it up for a 4wd swap, nothing we be of use to you. If you currently have the 2.5 with a 5 speed, your rear gearing is going to be 4.10. 4.0/5 speed combo got 3.07, so the front axle would also be useless to you. dhisso Posted May 7, 2013 Author Share Posted May 7, 2013 Well unfortunately I had the 4-speed trans.. So 3.55 gearing. So I should just keep a lookout for a ax-5 from a yj. One more question will a TJ 231 fit behind the ax-5? If the tranny you're looking at has a transfer case, why would you be looking for another transfer case? Keep in mind that the transfers case linkage in the YJs attached directly to the transfer case, whereas in the XJ and MJ it attaches to the floor. To use the transfer case shifter that will be in the YJ you will have to butcher the floor (transmission tunnel) of your MJ, PLUS cut off the top of the transfer case shift lever to avoid interference with the dashboard. To use a YJ trans/xfer case combo in an XJ or MJ you still need an XJ/MJ transfer case shifter mechanism to do the job halfway right and neatly. Just collecting one part at a time, and as for the tj case I have a few different options for a transmission and just incase this deal falls through I have another ax-5 and a nv3550 out of a tj I can get. Geonovast Posted May 8, 2013 Share Posted May 8, 2013 NV3550 won't do you any good. That's a 4.0 trans. There's no difference when it comes to XJ/MJ/YJ/TJ cases, except for the generational differences that come with model year. The differences you're going to be worried about is spline count and input shaft length, but if you get a case from another AX-4/5, it'll bolt up to any AX-4/5.
