workaholic
I would like to relocate the batter from the engine bay to the toolbox on my MJ. does anyone have any links to a writeup on how to relocate the battery? Thanks, Tom
DirtyComanche
There's not much to it. Go buy some welding cable - there's a chart to determine the correct size, but I think I used 0? Run the positive to the starter and the negative to a good ground point or back to the engine ground.
dakal
relocating mine. using #2 welding cable, solder copper ends.
workaholic
You didn't have to put an inline circuit breaker or fuse inline or anything? Tom
87manche
you should put an ANL fuse near the battery, in case one of your wires becomes damaged. A cable that size will carry enough current for long enough to explode the battery or at least do some serious damage.
dakal
in the process of making every thing. will do.
workaholic
How big of an ANL inline fuse should I use? Would linline be best or should I use another method? Thanks, Tom
feerocknok
I wouldn't run a ground from a toolbox back to the block. #1, too expensive. #2, it sucks. I'm running a 4' long ground on my Toyota (under the seat) and it @#$%ed my electronics a bit quite.
87manche
How big of an ANL inline fuse should I use? Would linline be best or should I use another method? Thanks, Tom you'll want to put that in the engine compartment, on the lead from the alt to the bat. You can't put one in on the batt lead to the starter. stock alt output is 90 amps IIRC, so I'd go with a 100 amp or so fuse. at least that way you'll cut the alt's circuit, and not end up welding the cable to your frame. workaholic
Ok so just to make sure I do this right. I should use #2 welding cable to go from the alternator to the battery and then a 4awg to go from the starter to the battery. Use a (in my case I have a 105amp alt instead of the stock 65IIRC) 120amp inline ANL fuse between the alt and the battery. Then for the ground run again a #2 welding wire from the ground on the battery to say the frame under the bed? feerocknok: how did running that ground to under the seat mess up your electronics? Thanks, Tom
feerocknok
feerocknok: how did running that ground to under the seat mess up your electronics? Basically too long of a ground created too much resistance similar to a bad ground. I'm running 2 Gauge, so maybe 0 would do the trick, but it's money in the can if you ask me versus grounding to the frame and having a nice motor to frame ground. Currently all of my lights are like a campfire, both in amplitude and consistency.
dakal
i'm using #2 from negative battery to frame . #2 from positive to starter. # 2 from engine to ground. #6 wire from alternator to battery. some kind of fuse my mechanic says to use in the alt to batt wire. i just was at my mechanics, they both said, don't use any fuse on that circuit. you would be screwed if it went when your off road. you rarely have a cable go bad. better to , like i'm going to do, slide the cable down water hose, and clamp it every 12 in to the frame.
