87sparTruck
I have an 87 2wd 2.5 5 speed with what I believe are 4.10's. I have an 89 4.0 front axle with 3.55? I'm currently looking at an 85 XJ with 3.73's and the rear has issues, broken teeth and maybe more. The XJ is the 2.8 and if I stay with 2.5 for the 4x4 swap what should I go with for an axle ratio? I also have a V8 that I may drop in some day.
88whitemanche
My 88 2.5 came with 4.11 gear ratio but going up on gears would help a lot for more power
87sparTruck
How much would it be to rebuild a rear with new gears?
Blue88Comanche
Cost of gears an labor, and maybe a new carrier and bearings, anywhere between $400 - $800 if you stay "open carrier" more if you drop in an auto or selectable locker if you change gears in a 2.5l keep the 4.10 or go 4.
87sparTruck
The trouble would be finding a front axle with 4.10's.
Blue88Comanche
I would start by checking with the places listed below. Most 2.5L I-4 Jeeps will have 4.10 or 4.11 (same thing) gears but you could always get lucky and find one in the pick and pull, best way to check the ratio is to count the theeth, or fin the tooth count stamp on the ring gear. Craigslist, car-part.com, local Pick and Pulls, other salvage yards it might even be cheaper to buy a 4wd Donor with 4.10 gears, then you would have a few extra parts then sell the rest as scrap

87sparTruck
Haven't thought that far into it yet but something mildy agressive for a street truck. Budget build, I'm still sitting on the stock 14's for now, and I'm not gonna cut the fenders. I might just chnage the 3.55 to 4.10. Or I did find a wrangler 4.10 from the same era which I believe is a direct swap?

The same era wrangler "YJ" has leaf springs in the front, you need to look for a "TJ" wrangler, I don't remember what years but its not hard to miss when you see it. The rear axle will still need the spring perches moved as well
87sparTruck
That figures it the YJ style and I have my stock rear with 4.10's(I believe) I'll have to verify.
