Blue88Comanche Posted February 17, 2013 Share Posted February 17, 2013 I replaced the axle shafts today with CV shafts and I still have a clanking sound during turns (mostly just right turns) could the hub bearing be on the way out, or would it be the spider gears? I will pull off the diff cover to check the gears next weekend when I can afford the oil... Also I seem to have damaged the seals in the axle shafts, how does one replace them? Check anything that moves in the front end! also for the seals if you have The original d30 with the vacuum disconnect the pass side axle seal is next to the vacuum disco, you have to remove the axle shaft to squeeze a new one in there, the driver side is even more fun it's in the housing so when you take the cover off to inspect the Spider gears take a look at the seal :thumbsup: Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If so, you need to add an oil seal inside the diff housing next to the passenger side carrier bearing. Napa Oil Seal 11800. Eagle Posted February 18, 2013 Share Posted February 18, 2013 "Clank" is suggestive of metal-on-metal. I very much doubt that a hub/bearing unit could make a "clank" and still roll. I also don't think anything inside the differential would make a noise that would sound like a "clank" inside the cabin. Is it really a "clank"? How about a "clunk"? I get a lot of clunking in the "new" (to me) 2001 XJ, and I have traced it to the upper control arms being shot.
