taz7290nfl
Have a 86 Comanche 4wd 2.5 liter and was wondering if you can swap out a manual transmission with automatic? How hard would it be?
Blue88Comanche
its doable, check the DIY section. you will need to add transmission cooler lines, trans cooler, shifter cable, and so on. the list in the DIY is for a 4.0 but the same general idea applys, just look for the 2.5 equivalent. dasbulliwagen
They originally came with the A904 automatic in 86, and are quite rare for the 4 cylinder, though they used the same bellhousing bolt pattern as the 2.8 v6 and are probably interchangable, though I would research that before buying. Youll also need a 2.5 auto flex plate, and probably a different crossmember for the trans mount. Drivehshafts may also be different lengths. Assuming its all the same as the 2.8, youd be best finding a complete donor for all the parts. 86 model 2.8 Comanches seem to be prolific, but Ive never seen an auto, though I do have an 86 XJ 2.8 auto parts truck. That might be the easiest to find, and then buy the flex plate, and have a rear driveshaft made. Good luck!
mnkyboy
Your truck is gonna be pretty gutless with stock gears. You will likely also lose gas mileage. Why do you want auto behind the 4cyl? Just a thought if you plan to lift it and such, most 4cyl autos had 4.56 gears stock and your axles will only accept up to 4.88 so you won't be able to put much bigger tires then stock on it before you start going backwards on gearing. Depending on transmission you should have 3.55 or 4.10 gears now.
