MJRemi
I have a leaky axle seal on the AMC 20 and am going to replace the seal and bearing. After multiple searches I have yet to find a site that refers to the MJ even having this axle as an option. They all refer to the CJs and Wagoneers. Apparently some 20s had an inner seal next to the diff. and others required the diff. lube to grease the axle shafts. I don't want to remove the R&P and LSD diff parts to find out but when I removed the shaft, it seemed to be coated with grease, not oil. Does anyone know for certain, whether or not, if our AMC 20 axles have that inner seal and is the shaft the same diameter as the ones listed for the CJs? Thanks for any help in advance. jpnjim
No inner seals @ the pumpkin Inner seals are just inboard of wheel bearings Jeep part #323 5929 Outer seals are outboard of wheel bearings Jeep part #324 0086 CJ seals should be Inner #317 0700 Outer #535 2662 (actually considered a basket in CJ application, not a seal). Inner real axle seals can be funny though, the MJ/XJ D44 drawing shows them, but they were missing in the 2 44's I took apart. I can't find the 87 parts book right now, so I can't say if the M20 & D44 spec the same inner seal (probably not tho)
jpnjim
Edit I found a later book, and THOUGHT CJ inners are the same, but they are not. Neither CJ axle seal matches The FSJ seals match, Inner & outer (outer is also same as D44) Inner 324 0086 Outer 323 5929 ^^^^^^^ For 81-86 Full Size Jeeps w/M20 & for 86 Comanche M20 Edited December 16, 2012 by jpnjim
MJRemi
Thanks for the part #s. As you can see, there is a lot of confusion with the MJ 20s and parts suppliers on the web do not even mention the MJ. Now I need to figure out the AMC 20 brake kits for disc conversion or stay with drums. What to do!!
Automan2164
Did one on a D35, same situation. I had no idea until I opened the new bearing and it was grease packed. Looked into some books, and asked around on here, and found out such a thing was possible. Inner axle seal just inboard of the bearing, grease packed bearing, outer seal. Pics of the process if for some ideas... Rob
jpnjim
Yeah, When I pulled an MJ D44 apart, there were no signs of it EVER having inner seals, even though the parts book showed them. I started a thread here, and IIRC, no one else had a 44 with them installed either. (all lubing with gear oil instead of grease) Like Robs pics show, the non-c clip 35's DID get them. (The D35 axles got fatter in 87' when the 4.0L came out, so there's actually an early seal, then a slightly bigger 87-89 seal) C-clip D35's lube the bearings with gear oil, and only have outer seals. Automan2164
I know Jim already posted the numbers, but here are some pics of the parts book. Rob
MJRemi
Thanks for all the help guys! With the part #s and pics I should have no problem getting this axle sealed up and installed under the Street Comanche. The fill plug on the back of the housing just rounded out (allen nut) so I had a short section of 1/2" steel pipe welded through the cover. I'll post some pics once it's in place. Eagle
AMC 20 drum brakes should be the same 10" x 2-1/2" that were used with the D44 in the XJ and MJ.
