madmax Posted November 22, 2012 Posted November 22, 2012 Hi: I have a 1989 MJ, 2.5L, AX-15 5 speed. The truck is in great condition and until recently was a daily driver. The problem I have is that when the air temperature is cool, as in the early morning, the truck will start but does not want to hold idle, then dies. After it warms up a little, I can drive it but it cuts out frequently and then dies and has to be restarted. When it cuts out, its as if its either getting no fuel at all, or no spark at all. Usually, after it sits in the sun for an hour or so and warms up, the problem seems to go away, but always comes back later. I have replaced the distributor cap and the TBS and initially that seemed to help, but the problem came back. I have had it to a mechanic that I trust, but he seems to be at a loss for what's causing the problem. Could a bad maps sensor be causing this? Any advice would be welcome. Thanks!
madmax Posted December 16, 2012 Author Posted December 16, 2012 Problem solved. I needed a new fuel pump. Apparently the old pump was working, but not delivering the right pressure and sometimes cutting out all together. Now runs like a top!
