Changing Gear Oil In Tranny...

As far as I know with my truck, it has 135k miles without the gear oil being replaced. I've heard that it won't harm anything to change the oil, and have also heard it can be the final thing to push my tranny over the edge. It does not like shifting smoothly into second, and often will not shift into reverse without some muscle. Want to try the oil before clutch and/or new tranny.

The fluid change killing the trans is a concern with the AW-4, not the manuals.

However, what oil you use depends on which transmission you have. Being an 89 4.0, you could have either the BA 10/5 or AX-15, which one ya got?

Not sure :dunno:

Manual says to use 75w-90 though.

Man, what a coincidence!

Today I changed the oil in my MJ for the first time. Not before it needed it. It has only been 25 yrs and 267k miles.

Here's my issues. When I drained the old oil, only about 2 qts drained out (what I did not spill in the driveway, but that's another story). When I pumped in the new oil, I only put in about 2 qts. The owner's manual states the trans take 7.3 pints - that's almost 1 gal. Had I lost that much oil over the yrs? Did I not put in enough? The fill plugs are not high enough on the trans to fill it to the top.

My trans, a BA 10/5, has two plugs on the right side. The forward plug was easiest to access for pumping in the new oil. Was the correct plug? (After I was done, I started to remove the back plug and oil started to drain out. I closed it up tight.)
