Can the transfer case (4WD) and the extension housing (2WD) be freely swapped on the AX15, or is the output shaft lengths different? Not worried about the spline count.

They can be swapped, but the output shafts are different lengths. I've seen several people manage to just cut the shaft down without removing it on the pukey, but I don't think that's possible with the AX transmissions.

2WD output shaft is a lot longer and has provisions for a speedo gear on it. I have a completely disassembled 2WD AX-15 in the basement and I tore it down to see what was interchangeable. The front 3 parts of the tranny (case, intermediate plate, and bellhousing) are identical and the 2WD extension and 4WD adapter plate can be swapped. You can swap a 4WD output shaft in place of the 2WD but it involves pressing everything off the output shaft (basically a rebuild).

The ol memory cells ain't working like they used to. I knew I had read all that info someplace before but couldn't remember anything about it. The minute I read 1987 Comanches' reference about the speedo gear it all came back. Search was no help. Thanks fellas.
