The time has finally come to tackle this task. Pedal is getting intermittently soft. WIll pump up and work, but that's just a graceful failure. There are no leaks, no loss of fluid. I'm going to (finally) use the external slave and bell housing I've stashed all these months, alnong with the AN plumbing upgrade. Here's my puzzle: Chrysler wants to sell me only the whole end-to-end package; master, hose, and (internal) slave (PN 4636864), and I don't want to pay their price to use only the master. Does anyone know a source for just an OEM master cylinder (not aftermarket)? Would prefer to use the MC for 1992, not the newer style with different mounting pattern. Thanks!

Pepboys carries the individual components to the AX-15 "Plastic" style MC/Slave set up. I know for a fact that they have the master and slave because I've bought them there. They're LUK brand.

 

As a note; everyone says you can't bleed this system which is false; and they also say you can't disassemble them which is also false. It's a matter of removing a roll-pin(roofing nail fits perfect), changing an O-ring and repeating the steps backwards.

 

Bleeding can be accomplished by manually pumping the slave cylinder rod with your hand. The system also self bleeds itself when acutated.

There is a bleed valve on the slave.

 

I got my master from Advanced last weekend, $50. Used one for a 94 XJ, metal and not plastic. Works fine.

 

Slave is for a 97 Wrangler........same as XJ.....used one that I had.

There was no bleeder valve on the 95 XJ AX5 slave I bought. It required the manual pumping method to bleed it, which was more convenient than a valve. I purchased the slave and MC from Advance and the line from NAPA. Clutch feels better than in my 03 TJ.

That is the slave I installed on my truck.

 

There is an empty bung on the slave which you would assume is for a bleeder valve. I even bought a new one to thread onto the new slave before it arrived. However, the bung is simply a blank 1/4" hole and is not drilled through the case of the slave.

 

Here it is installed on my truck, with the new roller pin plastic hydraulic line and all. No bleeder valve.

for an OEM only, master cylinder only, source if there be one.
