Spool for 8.8

I am think about locking my 8.8 and I want a locker but they are kind of high in price I mean 250 and up for a lunch box and you can go all the why up so I was thinking about a spool because it does the same thing right I no there was a write up about these before and I wanted to no what you guy thought about a spool and what company makes a good spool and stuff

i mean i can get a mini for about 100-135 so i think am going with one but what brand is the best

My understanding of a mini-spool is that it's basically just a huge chunk of metal. No brand of mini-spool will break.

 

I wouldn't go THAT FAR!!! :eek: :eek: ANYTHING can be broken!!!

 

Like all traction devices that fit inside a factory carrier. They are only as strong as the carrier itself.

Also, the one thing about 8.8's is that they are c-clip.. Which means you cannot use a full spool for it by itself, unless you get a c-clip eliminator kit which is about $150 or so.. And have heard the rear discs So the cheap spool, just became the same price as a lunchbox locker...

 

And with a mini-spool, its basically 3 chuncks of metal. the two splined side pieces, and then the one locking block in the middle which accepts the cross pin through it. And as for strength, the mini spool is only as strong as the cross-pin in shear.. Which can or can't be a ticking time bomb as well.. Depends on how you drive and how heavy your foot is..

 

The girlfriends Jimmy(running the MJ D35) had the cross-pin bolt shear, which allowed the cross pin to rotate and wollow out the hole in the case, which binded the spiders and resulted in the spiders busting and taking a pinion tooth with it...

And this was on an open diff... And hwat also could have happened was the crosspin fall out and jam into the case and stop the truck dead in its tracks...

 

So as CW said, anything can break, especially when non-stock forces are applied....
