jimoshel Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Picked up a '98 WJ, or is that a ZJ? 4.0, auto. Anyway the trannys bad. I have a '98 WJ, or is that a ZJ, 5.2, auto. Can I just swap the 44RE for the bad 42RE or is there something to look out for? I also have a '94XJ with a 4.0 and 42RE. Would that work? I prefer to use the 44 because I understand they 're stronger, according to the results I got from search. I will be keeping the transfer cases with their transmissions. :dunno:
Alexia Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 Your 1994 XJ has an AW4 transmission.(If it was a 2.5L it would have the 30RH transmission.) 1998 was the last year for the ZJ. An AW4 will work in a ZJ, but it will also require swapping the main PCM out for a manual transmission version. If you are trying to put a 42RE/42RLE/44RE/44RH into a XJ, forget it. Their TCM does not work independently of the PCM.
jimoshel Posted August 20, 2012 Author Posted August 20, 2012 It is not a AW4. I can recognize them. It is a square , rectangular shaped pan like the later autos. Not ruling out the possibility of a PO swapping something out.I am going to try and put a 44RE into a 98 ZJ.
