1989 comanche 4x4 4.0 Project: Shells bells

Recommended Posts

After lurking on this site for years and after letting the perfect comanche slip through my fingers I have become the proud owner of my first jeep comanche.

I bought her off a cool guy and his wife in lake forrest. He actually said his dad is a member here so if you see this sir, hi.

1100$ but sold with paperless title(PO just registered from out of state and was waiting on new ca title) so I'm still kinda holding my breath till I actually get the pink

195xxx but the 4.0 runs strong

Ba10 trans that must have the dreaded syncro problem cuz it hates first gear and sometimes all the gears but if you treat her kind she will shift smooth. Also new clutch about 5k ago

Has a leak from the distributor seal the PO said

The linkage to engage the 4wd is missing the clip so somtimes it pops out of place. When engaging 4wd ive discovered 4h doesnt seem to engage but N and 4l works.

Also has a cracked winshield and of course the rusted floorboard. Other than that the rest of the issues are minor cosmetic stuff.

immediate plans are waiting till friday after next to get paid so I can get her in my name and get the title sent to me. Then the winshield on the next check and then OD green paint with replacement fender flares. Then at least the rear bumper and hopefully a leveling kit or a small lift...........from here who knows ;)

After waiting forever to get a comanche I must say its everything I thought it would be. The 4.0 has plenty power and runs like a top. The whole interior layout is very confortable and spacious. It handles great.

I will add pics as soon as I get a chance.....stay,tuned comanche.gif

Alright ive figured out this photo thing so I will constantly adding photos from this point on so check in regularly for progress

Anyway ive been waiting two weeks to get paid so I could just get her in my name. Hopefully I get a big check and I can fix the winshield as well. A guy on craigslist will come to me and replace it for 115$ so id like to get that done as well. Then if I don't have enough this check I'm going to buy some leveling coils to take care of the horrible looking front end sag until I save enough for a lift.

Ill also be painting her od green and getting a aftermarket bumper and new headlight bezels

Better pics tommorrow

So today I ripped out the carpet to get a better look at the floor boards. Passenger side will obviously be needing repair but I'm not sure if the drivers side is bad enough......might as well do it anyway right?

Well here's some pics

Does anyone know what my fuel tank capacity is.....and how low does fuel usually get before the light comes on....my gas gauge is stuck at quarter tank all the time except sometimes the light will come on and I assume that means I'm low but when I filled up the other day it stopped at just under 15 gallons

Alrighty....not much of an update but went to the junkyard today and scored some headlight bezels and side markers as well as some emblems...

also got my winshield fixed. on the 30th I'm gunna get a new rear bumper, a leveling kit or get the floorboards repaired. Not sure which is most benificial. I know I the floorboards seems like the obvious choice I just can't wait to make it look how I want and right now it doesnt. A new bumper or leveling the front end would make it look a lot more "me" I guess.

Anyway pics tommorrow

I have seen those floor boards before.... oh yeah! They were part of davy jones ship the flying dutchman. ;)

Id work on those floors and get a bumper first. truck looks level to me.

What you wanting to do? puck the front and bring it up a tad or?

Doesnt look level at all......id like to just lift the front end up to level it out for now cuz I won't have the money for a lift tires driveshaft and dana44 for awhile. Noticed one of my tires has a leak from the valve stem so I may have to get tires before anything....kinda good but mostly sucky

So should I buy a 4.5 or 3,inch rough country lift?

what thing will I need to do/worry about from lifting it 3in and the difference compared to the 4.5inch lift

I don't plan on doing any CRAZY 4wheeling but I do camp alot and go to the desert so id like have a reasonable but practicle for my needs lift......

I'm leaning towards the 4.5 but if I do that won't I need to upgrade the drivetrane a lil?

Help me out guys

Dana 35 btw

youll need to relocate your trackbar and possibly get a longer drive shaft for 4.5"

go for the 4.5

How much u think that should run me and can u recommend a lift? Should I do the soa or no?

Whats a trackbar

Tell me everthing I need to know

i personally like the zone offroad 4.5" lift,

http://zoneoffroad.com/product?ki=486&gr=-1

you can go soa if you'd like if you do get the xj lift same lift, $50 cheaper but different AAL (add a leaf)

i did it to mine you'll get around 6-8" of lift tho

here is what 4.5" and soa in rear will look like

and max recommended size for it is 32" tires, i have mine with 35's with no problems (pic #2)

a track bar keeps your axle from wandering around,

one of the most important linkages on your front axle IMO

most lift kits come with a relocation guide for it,

you need your track bar and drag link parallel to prevent bump stear,

and death wobble,

attachment.php?attachmentid=126678&thumb=1&d=1338146419

if you do SOA,

youll need to calculate your pinion angle for even ujoint wear which will need to be incorporated into the spring perches,

or you can shim the axle to change it as well

PinionAngle.jpg

for SOA you need to get weld on spring perches

you can reuse your shock mounts, you can leave em in the stock spot (welded/ubolts) or you can flip em upside down for more down stroke of the shock.

it is recommended to get extended brake lines

and your drive shaft will need to be extended,

mine needed to be shortened because i converted mine to 4wd

thats about it,

if theres anything i havent covered can some one chip in?

here is a before and after of stock to 4.5" and soa

Wow thanks manche kid

But I still have a few more questions

IF I do the soa, should I just swap to a d44 and if so is there a certain year that,is,best?

Also what are the differences between soa and sua?

Is there a difference in preformance or something?

Also ur truck doesnt look totally level, is that just pics or does the front end sag a bit?

Also just like the, other guy asked how did u,get it fairly level with a soa in the rear and 4.5 in the front?

swaping the d44 in at the same time would be a good idea if your going for larger tires such as 35's

as for the year i am not to certian, maybe another member could chip in on that one?

soa vs sua

soa:

more articulation

highway & offroad handling improved

lots of lift for cheap

clearance increased exponentially

but there is more body roll

sua:

lower COG

no axle hop

and no axle wrap

more durable due to less torque wrap

and for the level ness,

optical illusion, i havent been able to get a good picture on level ground,

if you look at this pic closely you can see that the rear tire is significantly lower than the front (my drive way is uphill :P due to the many mountains where i live)

edits,

my truck isnt level due to soa which got me 7" in rear, and only 4.5 in the front.

Ur really helping alot manche kid I appreciate it....

I was only planning on going as large as 33s...and at this point I'm leaning more towards just 4.5in sua lift

Do u,think I should still try and swap for the d44 if I'm only gunna do 33s and stay sua?
