Recommended Posts

Is a 1998 jeep xj 4.0 4wd a good donor will the auto trans, t case, two drive shafts and front axles work on my 1989 4.0L 2wd auto trans

You will have to get a new rear drive shaft made because of the length difference.

I read 88, not 98. My bad.

The 98 transmission probably has all the sensors needed for the 89 TCU, plus more. I think the 89 TCU only needs an output speed sensor. I can pretty much guarantee the plugs are different, so you will have to splice some wires, but think it should work. You will also need a longer speedometer cable as it will have to go to the rear output of the transfer case, about a foot or so past where it used to be. Pretty sure (but again no positive) that your mechanical speed sensor will bolt onto the 98 case.
