87MJTIM Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 My '87 has been making noises from the speedometer. The noises vary from squeeking like a bunch of mice to sometimes a grinding noise. The squeeking has become more consistant, while the grinding is on cold days. Additionally, on the cold days the speedometer will register very high speeds. According to it, I've gotten to 75 mph in 3rd gear! I have seen different on-line stores advertise "speedometer gears." There are lots of different gear sizes/teeth. Is servicing/repairing a speedometer something a novice can do? Or do I send it out to a repair shop? For instance, http://www.autoinstruments.com/index.html
drcomanche Posted January 28, 2012 Posted January 28, 2012 The "speedometer gears" you were seeing were most like the unit that you put into the transaxle. Those, if that is the source of your problem, are easy to replace. Is the noise coming from the speedometer itself, like from the dashboard?
87MJTIM Posted January 28, 2012 Author Posted January 28, 2012 Yes, it is coming from the dashboard. I should also mention that I am on my third cable- the original and two replacements. My mechanic looked at it and told me the problem was internal.
