problems with 4WD

Recommended Posts

Hey, I recently bought a 1991 comanche, 4.0 ,5 spd, 4WD, and the 4WD always worked perfectly. I went to use it the other night and nothing. The light would come on but go off as soon as i started going. I tried low range and the truck was in low range, but no 4WD. To me this means the transfer case is fine, but for some reason the front wheels arn't engaging. Where do the vacume lines connect, i looked but couldn't really find them (I'm new to comanche's). Is there any other parts in the front end i should check? thanks

vacuum lines should go to a "box" attached the the axle on the passenger side. I'd say it's about a foot from the tire, right below the oil filter practically. Check that the lines haven't crack or pulled off. If the lines look to be in good shape it might be the motor itself. You can pull it off and try cleaning it, if that doesn't work you can slide the collar over to engage the axles by hand, but your front DS will always spin.

there's a cheap homemade manual replacement.

Umm, I think that the vacuum disco was gone by 91.

Are you sure that its not in 4wd?

The light is operated by a switch on the side of the T-case.

If your sure, then I would check the T-case linkage and make sure its tight.
