shortround
in my 86 comanche with a new wiring harness from a 91 cherrokee and a new i6 drivetrain i can't get the speedo to work. I don't know where to start looking. Any suggestion?
maddzz1
91+ use an elec speedo, pre 91 use an mechanical speedo. Do you still have the old gauge cluster in?
ParadiseMJ
If it's a 4x4 look on the transfer case (driver side) for the speedo gear hook up. It's a sensor held down by one bolt and a two prong "fork". The gear is hooked to the speedo cable with a little square end, stuck into a square hole at the head of the cable. The other end of the cable hooks to the gauge cluster in the back, again, square end to square hole...make sure both ends engage. The long fix is to replace the cable, the short fix is to make sure both ends are engaged. If the cable is too tight and holding the cluster back, just climb under and push the cable towards the front to give it some slack. Pull the gauge cluster out, reach back and pinch the plastic connector together, and pull. It should come right out...line it up and push it back together. maddzz1
When I switched my cluster my speedo didnt work either. Somehow, I managed to get the needle for the speedo behind the little stopper (the little plastic piece near the 0mph mark the needle falls to when you turn the truck off). I had to remove the clear plastic and move the needle back to the other side of the little plastic stopper.
64 Cheyenne
Yes it has a new dash with the electronic speedand i replace the sending unit on the transfer case. I'm not trying to be a smart @$$ but did you replace the mechanical cable with the sender wire all the way to the transfer case?
johnnyc
Assuming that you have wired the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) correctly, is the sensor clocked properly in the t-case? There are notches with numbers on the sensor that correspond to the number of teeth on the plastic speedo gear. The prong on the retaining clip has to fit into the correct notch for the speedo to work properly. If the sensor is not in the right position, the speedo won't register.
