rear axle bearing race help

I already replaced rear axle bearings but there one problem before I'm able to installing driver side axle shaft back in rear axle.

 

rear driver side axle guider have stuck outer race from old bearing. I can't find a slider hammer puller with hook for pull race out...even my work don't have special hook for bearing to borrow :doh:

 

so is there any trick way to get it out? :dunno:

Book says drill 2 holes on opposite sides and break it with a chisel. I don't know where the book got a bit that would drill that hardened steel but I didn't have one would even scratch it. I used a cutting torch with the smallest tip I had available and cut it. By being careful there was no damage to the housing.

i don't care if scratch it. i already have new one ready to install. so i just want to remobve this old race out. sadly i don't have torch. haha :roll:

I'm not sure how you mean by drill it and chisel it by oppside? its on flange guide not housing like front axle. its rear axle :dunno:

 

edit: sorry to forget it. its ford 9" rear from bronco tho.

I'm unsure of what the ford 9" race setup is, but can't you just use a brass punch/hammer? thats what i just did on my d30, but if your asking it must be a different setup :???:

If you have access to a welder, run a bead of weld on the race. The race will nearly fall out, the weld will cause the race to shrink.

:doh: i was thinking pinion bearings. that bead of weld is a friggin good idea

I do have welder but not full expert. A bead as like welding on race but make a bead on low volt without fuse bead on race?

just lay a bead around the center of the race (weld a ring). the heat will distort and shrink the race

Hopefully it's work. Perfect time for me because my good frend Jason(the guy who welded my rear brake caliper brackets) will come by tonight to weld tiny exhaust hole, rear axle hole that I addicent drill too big for breather :oops: so I'll ask him if can he do that trick with outer race. :chillin:

if you have a grinder ... small angle or straight, for your air compressor just grind a diagonal line in the race till you are close to breaking through. Then with a chisel smack it in the grind line, or if you have a punch hit the side of the line which will make the race collapse into the line. I have then just pulled them out by hand.

 

I hope that made sense. If not I guess I can take a pic. I have used this trick many times and as a matter of fact just 4 days ago. If you happen to break through the race and touch the tube just make sure you file/grind/sand the high spots. A high spot will make an irregular spot in the new race and a low spot won't have an effect.

 

some times the grinding discs are too big to fit in the tube, using a disc that is nearly worn out will give you plenty of room to work in the opening of the tube.

I was thinking same thng but unforuntley my air compressor is screwed up. Thanks to my brother :doh: so all I have now is 4" grinder from harbor freight. Too big to fit in.

 

Yeah I did use the chisel(actually air hammer :thumbsup: ) after grind the race(tend be inner race) down. It's fun to do that on wheel hub bearing.

I have learned to keep a few old discs around because the fit into tighter spaces. LOL With out a compressor though you could have a thousand discs and still be stuck.

Update! My friend Jason just did weld the race, it's work like charm to get old outer race out no problem! :cheers:

acutally it just happened in a week. i was busy with work. no big deal ;)

 

i never hear about welding trick. important i keep it in my mind next time :cheers:
