fughley Posted November 30, 2006 Share Posted November 30, 2006 Hey out there- I just went to the local bone yard- Pick and Pull on route 41 and 173 if your from northern IL- they have quite a few XJ's to pull but from. But I read up on ther dash conversion and since I didn't have a Tach, this looked pretty easy or so I thought. Good news: the dash works great everything is tracking, temps, pressure etc. but the speedo likes to jump as the speedo goes up to about 50 miles an hour then it is stable. So my question is this: when I pulled the dash in the yard I spun the back fitting on the speedo to make sure it worked, my buddy said it will screw up the counter weights in side. But when I installed the dash the speedo cable came out of the sleeve a little. But since it works, I don't believe it is broken. So what do youy think- speedo cable from the trans or counter weights? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
87manche Posted November 30, 2006 Share Posted November 30, 2006 I think that you likely don't have the cable into the back of the guage all the way, or you've got the cable routed with a sharp radius. Pull the cluster, then pull the cable up a little bit, make sure it's not bent sharply anywhere, then reinstall on the cluster. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Pull the cluster, then pull the cable up a little bit, make sure it's not bent sharply anywhere, then reinstall on the cluster. Ditto what he said. If the original speedo had been "jumpy" I'd suggest that the cable needs lubrication (and that wouldn't hurt anyway), but if the problem began after the swap, either the cable is kinked or has a tight radius somewhere, or the and isn't firmly engaged in the speedo head. The speedo cable connector was not in all the way and was causing the jumping. fortunately I had the connector from the bone yard unit- I pulled a bit too hard opon removingit!
