another transfer case swap question

I'm thinking that the np 207 on my 86 (2.5) may be going bad (terrible grinding sound now coming out when in 2wd) and am wondering if its possible to use a 231 in its place.

not necessarily, but it does have to be a 21 spline input. any modern 2.5 jeep will have that, plus 87-89 4.0 MJ/XJ/YJs. try to get the linkage if you can. I'm not certain if there are any differences.
