87Warrior
My wife wants remote start for her 02 Camry LE 4-banger. Should I find a kit and hook it up in the driveway? I am very comfortable with a soldering iron and can follow wiring diagrams. Or should I find a local shop and pay to have them install their kits? Any recommendations on what a good remote start unit is? We DO NOT want one with an alarm.
JeepcoMJ
usually buying a kit local comes with free install, so I'd go that route.
Automan2164
Go talk to a local installer shop. I bought everything for my girlfriends 07 Corolla from my local guy. I good him what I had, what I wanted to do, and he set me up. I told him about putting it in myself, and asked him how hard it was. He was really nice, told me how they would go about it, and even printed me out a page from their installers software. Its cool, because it identifies all the wire colors and locations of wires you need by the make and model needed for install. In my case, she only wanted the start function, and was ok using the stock fob to lock the doors. I just got a one button fob system, start only, with the bypass for the theft deterrent key. If her car has a chipped key, you need one. It's a box with a coil that you put a key into to trick the PCM. I got a key programmed, but not cut to use inside... that way if a smart their were to find they key, they still couldn't use it to start it. Whole shebang cost me $150 ish. Needless to say, I still haven't gotten around to putting the darn thing in... Rob L.
fbtased2002
I had a 02 superduty diesel and just had to have remote start and keyless entry.... cost me $700 bucks for "Autopage" brand at a local shop! Cartoys quoted me "1100" for their brand. But hands down worst thing about it was the REMOTE... The battery only lasted a month! And when it died the remote would loose the code and the truck wouldn't unlock with out the alarm going off!!! I had to carry the second remote on me just in case, so I could get it started then I would have to take the truck to the shop (20miles away) every time just to have a new AAA battery put in! I did this every month for 2 years before I sold it :fs1: ... Do your research, good luck

lostissues
if the Camry is an automatic transmission, I'm pretty positive if you had somewhere do it it would only be the basic install price (IE no extra bypass, key bypass, extra wiring unless you want it). Camrys are very simple cars to do a remote start in all the wires are very easy to get to. for that I would go with a DEI product http://www.directed.com/ this is their basic one in the python brand http://www.pythoncarsecurity.com/produc ... ductID=624 this is a nice one with a little longer range I think and a few extra features http://www.pythoncarsecurity.com/produc ... ductID=617 here is a basic unit with basic install at best buy ( :wall: //former Circuit City employee :( ) http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Avital+-+4111+Remote+Start+System+(Basic+Install+Included)+-+Black/9495076.p?id=1218114247707&skuId=9495076 little nice unit with basic install, I would get this one because it has a bit more range to it http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Viper+-+5101+SuperCode+1-Way+Remote+Start+System+(Basic+Install+Included)/9347824.p?id=1218089217810&skuId=9347824 if you want locks it will probably be a little extra. if you decide to do it your self http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/for ... asp~TID~54 be sure to test all your wires with a multi meter and hook up all safety systems (hood pin and kill switch)
87Warrior
The car is an automatic and does not have the fancy VIP factory alarm system. Not sure about a chipped key. little nice unit with basic install, I would get this one because it has a bit more range to ithttp://www.bestbuy.com/site/Viper+-+5101+SuperCode+1-Way+Remote+Start+System+(Basic+Install+Included)/9347824.p?id=1218089217810&skuId=9347824 if you want locks it will probably be a little extra. Wow, this is just about perfect for her, plus the FOB is very similar to the factory yoda FOB. Due to the excessive weight in key chains and department store 'savers' cards on her key ring, it will be critical to get one with the keyless entry included. As I sit here and think about it, it would make since to have a shop do the install... its getting cold outside and I would rather work on the MJ and TJ. lostissues
good idea with the shop, if something goes wrong they will cover it, and if you ever have questions or problems you can bring it back to them. if your wife has a smart phone (I have a Droid) you should look into the key ring app http://droidapplications.org/keyring the locks should be like 20 bucks extra if they are still pricing things like the did a little while ago even thought they are simple as hell to do in that car. and make sure they hook up the hood pin so it doesn't start when you have your hand in the engine bay and lean on the keys. Good luck, Jonathan

You got me excited that was going to be a link to an app that turns your phone into a keyfob. I guess a rewards card app is cool too. Rob L. :D they do have them but they require a unit for the starter and a subscription, DEI has one http://www.viper.com/smartstart/ and Compustar also has one http://www.dronemobile.com/ which I want to add onto my starter but I cannot see paying for the unit and then an additional 120 bucks a year for the service. And there are probably a few others out there also.
