Hick
I have an 87 comanche 4cyl 4spd 2wd that I'm looking to make 4wd. What transfer case/other modifications are needed/what all from an XJ will work? Thanks
jimmy21669
You will need an AX4 or AX5 from a 4WD. The NP231 from an XJ will work...the front Dana 30 will if it is the same gearing, as well as the front driveshaft. You will have to cut down your current driveshaft. Hope this helps get you started. Hick
whats the difference between an ax4 out of a 4wd versus out of a 2wd
Geonovast
You can bolt a T-case to the back of a 4wd unit. 4wd units do not have provisions for a speedometer gear. You CANNOT bolt a T-case to the back of a 2wd unit.
Hick
alright, thank you. Does the speedometer cable go to the t-case on a 4WD?
Automan2164
alright, thank you. Does the speedometer cable go to the t-case on a 4WD? Yep. Rob L.
JeepcoMJ
to put it further, a 4wd ax4/ax5 uses a different output shaft and output housing (aluminum housing behind mid plate). the internals, with exception of output shaft, are completely the same. carnuck
For the swap you need speedo cable, trans, tcase (from 2.5 or 2.8 V6 XJ or MJ), front and rear driveshafts (XJ front is the same but not rear), Tcase shifter. Crossbar for 4x4. Think that's all? If you were close to Seattle, I think I still have an AX-5 and NP207 kicking around for cheap.
Geonovast
Crossbar? You mean the transmission crossmember? No difference between 2wd and 4wd ones.
