tranny swap help

Recommended Posts

so, here's the deal, my ba-10 has a leaking slave, grinds randomly between gears and hates the 1-2 shift when cold, I'm getting a rusted out 96 cherokee with a mint running motor, newer aw4 trans and 231 tcase for $250 tomorrow. i plan on swapping in the auto trans/231 from the 96, i know ill need the tcu and wiring, running an external cooler, my question is this--a: front driveshafts are the same length in comanches and cherokees correct? b: my original combo was a 4.0 ba-10 d35/d30, i swapped in a 8.25(1" longer snout then the d35 according to the measurements on here) so if i swap in the automatic trans, which takes a 1" longer driveshaft then the manual, my current driveshaft should still fit fine due to the 8.25 i swapped in making up the 1" difference correct? (I'm spring over in the rear and 5" lift in the front)

XJ and MJ front shafts are the same, correct. The front shaft from the 96 will work fine.

However.. you're backwards about the rear. The AW-4 is longer than the BA 10/5 and AX-15, so it needs a 1" shorter driveshaft than the sticks.

Also, don't know if you know this because you didn't mention is, but the 96 flexplate and converter will not work in a Renix Jeep unless you convert to the 96 engine control system.

crap. how hard is it to swap to the 96 system? whole computer wiring etc etc swap? i don't plan on hooking up the neutral safety switch, crank position sensor is the same, so whats the difference?? i want to keep my renix system and my motor and just put the 96 trans and t case in, whats the difference between the years? i suppose i can always get a flexplate/converter from a 90 and older jeep...

The Renix CPS and 96 CPS are not the same.

Just using the trans, yes, you would keep your current CPS. But the CPS wouldn't know what to do with the windows on the 96 flexplate.

HO conversion would involve swapping the motor, all the wiring(engine bay and dash), cooling system, vacuum system, and you would need an HO fuel sending unit.
