gear and locker question

Recommended Posts

I'm regearing my front dana 30 to 4.11 to match my rear 8.8 and was wondering what brand of gears i should buy? Right now my gears are 3.09 so I'll need a new carrier but if I put a locker in there I wouldn't right? Do I need to buy the whole rebuild kit with bearings and stuff also or just new seals?I'm also installing the gears myself with some help.

Thanks

Tim

The locker IS a carrier. You will still need new bearings and new seals to do the job right.

Unless you mean a "lunchbox" locker, such as a Lock-Rite. That uses the stock carrier, but it can't correct for having the wrong stock carrier. If your new gears are on the other side of the carrier break and you want to add a lunchbox locker, you'll still need the new carrier.

so an aussie or lock right is a lunch box locker right? but a arb or detroit is a full locker?

Just to further muddy the waters, EATON also makes a EZ-Locker that is a lunch box.

Detroit makes a number of traction devices. A full case detroit locker is the carrier as previously mentioned.

Aussie, Lock-Rite EZ and Spartin are all "lunchbox" lockers.

The bottom line is, if you're going from 3.07s (or 3.08 or 3.09) to 4.11s, you are crossing the carrier break and you WILL be buying a carrier. With that established, you might want to sharpen your pencil and see if it makes sense to buy a new open carrier and a lunchbox locker, or how much more it would cost to buy a "real" locker such as a Detroit.

I prefer DANA gears. They are marked just like the factory. This usually helps allot with the setups.

A locker in the front axle has some handling quirks. Most lockers are not recomended with a two piece pass axle as most renix jeeps had. If it where mine and I was needing a carrier, a Tru Track (gear driven limited slip) would go in. Short of this a lunch box in the open carrier. (I have a Spartin sitting on the shelf for mine.)

I would get the master rebuild kit. With a new carrier, new bearings are a good idea.

This job really requires expertice and specailized tools to be accomplished properly. Good luck with it!
