woody62
what is the correct oil to put in the my 5 spd trans? Doesn't look like 90w.
whowey
The factory recommended fluid is 75w-90 GL-5 fluid. But from the pictures Correy has of his AX-5 rebuild, it appears to have bronze synchro rings in it. So you would want to run a GL-4 fluid in it. Now if you have the T-5, which I don't think came in '87 then you want to run a Synchromesh type of fluid.
woody62
we are putting a 5 spd in it. We can't find GL4 Only GL4 and GL5 royal purple. Is that OK to use???
woody62
I'm told this is a 1986 5 spd.
wallisek
You can't go wrong with Royal Purple or Redline IMHO. I've had various manual transmissions between the multiple jeeps I've owned and have used Redline MTL in all of them.

RP doesnt offer a GL-4 that I have seen. Redline, Amsoil and a couple of other high end manufacturers offer GL-4 fluids still.
wallisek
Ran MTL in a T5, NV3550 and AX-15. Never had any problems, all trans had 150+k on them with the fluids. :dunno: T5 was especially picky. First AMC recommended ATF then later switched to 90w gear oil. Later they said use GL-3 I think. Shifted like crap with all oils until I tried MTL (80w). Worked great, smooth shifting and no noisy gears. I've come to find that AMC / Jeep never really made up their mind on correct oil for their manual transmissions. It has always changed back and forth to one or another. :hmm:
woody62
 Redline MTL So where do you buy this stuff, cost? and how much do I need? Can it be added to what I have or do I have to empty it all and replace?
comanche09
I have run Mobil 1 10w-30 in my AX with no issues. Recently switched to Redline MT-90 and noticed no difference in shift quality, but I do have a warm and fuzzy now knowing that Redline is in it. :brows:
wallisek
You can order Redline online through jegs or summit but you get hit with shipping. I've found best retail place to buy Redline is Baxter's. For Royal Purple, Napa seems to be the best bet. O'Reillys, Autzone, etc.. don't seem to carry that stuff anymore. At least not any of the local stores in my area.
