tips on lifting my rear

Recommended Posts

okay, my MJ rear.I purchased an RE6020.

it is an XJ 3.5 lift.

http://www.rubiconexpress.com/dynamic/m ... lderid=185

the only lift specifically for MJ was 5.5"

would adding a leaf, to the "leaf under" axle gain any height?

custom rear shackles only add about an inch or so.

Help!! I want to put the lift on next week sometime.

Any 3" MJ add-a-leaf will work. XJ leafs are different and the XJ 3" leaf will only lift your truck 1.5". Rusty makes one, as should Rancho and Rough Country. You might have to call them to buy the aal separately.

thanks Pete,

I have a friend that works at a muffler shop.

I was going to put the lift on myself.

But, It sounds like I'll really need the correct leaf.

Plus, the shocks and control arms look really, really old.

removing those will not be easy.

I also am having 4.88 gears dropped in my XJ this week.

Careful on the upper control arm bolts at the body. More to the point, careful with your 15 mm socket. I still have one rattling around in my frame. :D Soak everything in PB blaster (or other rust penetrant, but not WD-40) for a few days ahead of time to make life easier on you. There's nothing especially complicated with installing a mild lift, but rust and bad luck can quickly make things challanging.

  • 4 weeks later...

I have installed my lift. Thanks to two

"good" friends. It fought us a bit.

I did not do anything to the rear. It is about an inch or so low in the rear.

I'll try to post a pic tomorrow.

my rear shackles are only 4.5 from bolt to bolt.

should I try a longer shackle. I never knew them to add much lift.

does an aal actually help raise a lift on SUA?

I want to stay SUA for now.

The *arch* of the leafpack is more important, not necessarily whether it's SOA or SUA (although SOA leafpacks are generally flatter than SUA packs). XJs have a much flatter leaf pack than the MJ and so the same AAL will affect them more. A 3" XJ AAL will give you about 1.5". If you need more than that you can try a longer shackle or find an MJ specificx AAL.
