jimoshel
1989 4.0l. Putting the head gasket on I noticed there are no locating pins or bushings on the block. I am having a hard time believing Jeep, or any manufacturer would omit these. Might explain why the old gasket failed. Did or did not Jeep use them? Geonovast
I was surprised when I saw that the 4.0 in my 88 XJ(the one I was taking out), had one. Then I looked harder, and it was the front driver's head bolt snapped 1/2 inch above the deck.
mjeff87
yeah, quite the PITA to r&R the head with no dowels....especially by yourself. You can cut the heads off the old head bolts (if you choose not to reuse them 1X) and use them as guides/gasket aligners. Jeff
