jeephack Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 Went yard saleing with the wife this morning. Ran across these . As my son's MJ came without any kind of speakers, I decided to take a chance that we could make these work. I'm not really heavy into audio so I'm asking the audiophiles among us what it is that I have purchased, and if I can make them function. If not...well I've pissed away more than $5 on a good cigar before. Anyone???
jimoshel Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 It certainly looks like there worth more than you paid. A good quality set of 6" speakers goes for around $40. Or more. The door speakers on a MJ are 5 1/4 inches. However 6-7inchers will fit. Just drill new mounting holes for the attaching screws. The 2 speakers that go in back behind the door are ovals.
jpdocdave Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 they look like they'll make some noise. you can make them work
jimoshel Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 Just a tip. One way to check a garage sale speaker is to take a 1 1/2 volt battery. Everybody carries one in there pocket, right? Connect the battery to the terminals on the speaker. The cone will either go in or go out. Reverse the battery. The cone will now go the opposite of what it did before. Hold the speaker to your ear and listen for a scraping sound as the coil moves. Other than a click when first applying voltage it should be silent.
jeephack Posted June 20, 2010 Author Posted June 20, 2010 take a 1 1/2 volt battery. Everybody carries one in there pocket, right? As a matter of fact, I do. Inside a small LED flashlight that I keep in my pocket, along with a lighter and my pocket knife. I try never to leave home without them.
jimoshel Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 Well it sure beats carrying a audio signal generator and distortion meter.
Comanche County Posted June 20, 2010 Posted June 20, 2010 A good cigar is never pissing away money! :chillin: I'm slowly working through a box of Onyx beauties at the moment....
