drase
What every you do.........Don't drop one of the bolts down in the bell housing  You will for sure be taking the transmission off  Not a big deal with an automatic, you can fish it right out with the inspection cover off. I think I know what the inspection cover is, so I assume you got to the CPS from going in from above the engine?
drase
No, you should be able to get at it. It's just... not fun. Dropping the trans would make it easier. I just don't see how. It appears the CPS is right against the cowl. Has anyone on here replaced a CPS on a 4.0 2WD without dropping the tranny? Is so, how? I.ve done mine twice, once just because I thought it went bad while troubleshooting another issue. Off is easy: I used a 3/8 drive with a 12" extension, + universal (wrap the universal joint with teflon tape 5-6 time to stop the flop). It's a little tricky at first but it will work out. On: On the bolts, wrap a little teflon tape around the head of the bolt. This will help keep the bolt stuck in the socket and prevent it from falling out into the bell housing. Tighten it by hand first using the extension + universal. You don't want to cross thread anything. Anthony Ajpolitz, did you do this from above the engine or from under the truck? Wildman
drase - I think your getting the wrong idea about this, you have to get under the truck to change out the CPS, you really can't get to if from the engine bay, or from the top. The electrical connector, yes, but the bolts for the CPS, no. You seam to keep asking about that, and if you found the CPS on the bell housing, you'll see how it's kind of behind, under the firewall. Gotta roll around on the ground for this one. Layoff the coffee, you'll need all the patients you can get.
drase
Alright guys after about 30 mins under the truck I could not get the bolts to budge. I do not have an extension and my patience was gone 15 mins ago. I'm getting it towed to my mechanic, who will charge me 1 hr of labor to install it. I give up, the CPS won. I'm ready to be flamed. :D
DJM/78
this thread might apply to me too. today i was gonna post that about once a month, when I'm driving the '91, it will give a sudden hiccup, like all of a sudden for one second, the is no power at all coming from the motor, then its instantly fine again and a month will go by and it will do it once more. this month it has done it twice. --------- same thing? cps ?? Someone might correct me here but I don't think 91"-92" MJ's have the CPS , just Renix 4.0's . Yours sounds like fuel injection or something with a sensor or harness problem . :dunno:
drase
It was the CPS, truck is running fine now.
Wildman
Most of us will not flame you....... You asked for help, we offered, you couldn't do it, and before you busted something else, you took it to a pro to have done. Nothing wrong with that.
Geonovast
Someone might correct me here but I don't think 91"-92" MJ's have the CPS , just Renix 4.0's . ....what?? The HOs have a CPS, it's just a different sensor. Mounted in the same spot. An Electronic ignition system cannot function without a CPS, as there's no points in the dizzy. For some reason 91 has its own. The sensor itself is the same as the 92-96?, but the plug is 91 specific. For the record, changing a CPS on a 2.5 is ridiculously easy.
