I pulled my dads head off his f150 for maintenance and i am having troubles figuring out how to re time it i only pulled off the left side the other side is still all attached anyone have any idea how to make sure that this side is times because the machinist that worked on the head moved the cam shaft so it is not in the original place were it was when i took it off.

Thanks

so the 8th digit in your vin is a 6? if so, here:

Vehicle Application:

1997 Ford F-150 Super Cab 4.6L, Vin 6, Eng Cfg V8

Customer Concern:

The technician has the timing cover removed and is looking for information for the timing chain installation. One of the chain guides was worn badly causing a noise issue. This vehicle has the VIN "6" (Windsor) engine.

Tests/Procedures:

1. When installing the chains, the crankshaft keyway should be at the 11:00 position, the passenger's side camshaft chain gear should have a timing mark at the 11:00 position, and the driver's side camshaft chain gear timing mark should be at the 12:00 position.

2. Lay both timing chains flat so that the link on one end of the chain is sitting in a "I" position and two links at the other end of the chain are laying in a "=" position. Mark these links with a felt tip marker, chalk, or dab of paint.

3. Install the chain so that the two side-by-side marked links straddle the camshaft gear timing mark and the single link on the opposite end of the chain is at the 6:00 position of the crankshaft gear.

Install the chains so that the slack side of the chain is laying on the guide and tensioner side.

4. Install the chain guides and tensioners, then release the tensioners so that the chain is taught.

5. After both chains have been installed, rotate the engine by hand two crankshaft revolutions and verify all chain gear marks show up in the correct position.
